hellaphone-wallpaper.jpgBecause I am a graphics guy, my buddy asked me to make him a wallpaper for his mother-in-law’s cell phone. I needed to know her screen dimensions to make it and he didn’t know what they were. So I searched good old Google to find the dimensions and instead, I stumbled upon this great little website.

http://wallpaper.hellaphone.com/  This site is a great free tool to make custom wallpapers for virtually any cell phone. You can either upload your own image or link to one on the web. The phone I had to make one for has a front and inside image. The website created both images for me.

The free wallpaper tool is a great find and very easy to use.

Apple Takes a Bite Out of Windows

mac-bites-windows.gifApple has taken a small bite out of Windows. Well, not really. Apple has moved up in market share to 6.6% based on a not-so-formal analysis from Net Applications. I used to always refer to Mac users as part of the 3%. For years I always saw Mac users as 3% and Windows as virtually 100%, but not exactly. Turns out, based on the analysis of internet usage tracking the OS that was used to access the sites that Net Applications has tracking code implemented on Apple has moved up on the charts significantly.

Though, the study is informal, it is based on about a half million sites with a total of about 1 billion page views per month. So, informal, yes, but representative of fact, probably pretty close. Now that Apple has gained in market share, one would assume that Windows went down, but it didn’t. Turns out that Windows has stood strong at 91%. It is true that Apple has gained a share, if you want to listen to these numbers, but Windows has not dropped, therefore, the title of this article is false.

The article goes on to predict that Apple could gain up to 15% share potentially in 5 years. I see this as being possible, but not a guarantee. With iPods and iTunes becoming mainstream, people are accepting Apple products and getting comfortable with the ease of use. However, with prices still being through the roof compared to PCs on the market, the mainstream may just decide that even though they are using Apple products, the products are compatible with PCs, so why switch. It makes sense, Apple is sneaking into peoples’ homes but isn’t really driving a convincing campaign to capture the computer market.

I guess the real question is, does it matter what OS people use? I don’t think so. Now that everything is moving towards being web-based, the OS that people use will soon become irrelevant. As long as you have a web browser, you will soon be able to do absolutely all computer tasks online, including storage. With this being the movement, we may see less of an OS struggle and more of a browser struggle. This is when I predict we will see Google enter the arena of web browsers. They are already building plenty of desktop applications that are solely web-based so once they perfect that, we will surely see a gBrowser follow.

Adobe Has a Ton of Applications

At work the other day, one of my co-workers and I were discussing Adobe’s acquisition of Scene 7. We began looking around at Adobe’s web site and realized that they have a ton of products now.

Neither of us were sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Adobe is obviously the vendor of choice for all of my graphics and interactive development applications. Well, most of them anyway. So if I want anybody to purchase or develop new applications to benefit me, I want it to be them. The three vendors I really trust are Adobe, Apple and Google. Personally, I like Google the best because most of their stuff is free. The only thing better than free food is free computer applications… right?

Our shared fear is that Adobe may be taking on too much and potentially lose focus. Follow the link above and check out everything they have now. They have more applications than ever before and I honestly don’t even know what many of them do. Ultimately, as long as they are able to keep focus and budget where I need it, things will be fine. It should lead to more and more power to the necessity applications, like Photoshop and Flash.

This could lead to less applications and just ultra powerful tools for us interactive folks. Even with Scene7 potentially being added to Photoshop, Flash and, I hate to mention it, Dreamweaver. If this is their plan, acquire strong applications, build them into their current set and then charge us more, I will be very happy and shell out the extra dough. I would rather pay a ton for one all-inclusive application than have to jump between all these different apps.

Stay tuned to Adobe over the next few years… It will sure be interesting to see what they do.

PhxCreative.com will be undergoing a makeover shortly. Nothing big… I considered putting it on an open source platform, but nah, this is all mine, well, other than blogger, but not for long. I will be phasing blogger out for my own blogging engine, once I build it. But anyway, the site will be staying as is except for the width. I will be widening the site. Why? ‘Cause of Google. I figure, everyone has big screens, and if you have a small screen on my site, I just don’t really care anymore, so I am widening for content and bigger things and especially, for Google’s search results.

If you come here, like me, you may notice some changes soon. It should be quick and painless. Mainly image and css tweaks to make the change. Let’s see, it is 9:49, maybe I should try it now? Ready go…
